Deanery support
Ultimately, personal career management is the responsibility of the individual. This requires regular reflection, self-assessment, options appraisal and preparation for key transitions.
Offer impartial, often informal guidance and career reflection space; it is the responsibility of the mentee to seek appropriate mentors and to drive the relationship. Formal schemes can provide opportunity to find mentors.
Mentors don't provide solutions but bring impartial expertise, wisdom and role-modelling to help a person to think through their directions and career plans. Can help develop or extend career networks.
Develop and share careers information and support for all medical/dental trainees in Wales, whilst supporting faculty in providing help at local level.
Provide both group support through workshops/ events and impartial, confidential one-to-one help with individual career challenges.
Offer advice, guidance and targeted support for trainees whose career progression is not going smoothly or is impacted by other factors.
Provide both individual and group support and expert, tailored services to help individuals work through career-related challenges.
Based in the Deanery, teams provide operational support to all medical and dental training programmes, trainees and medical Specialty Schools. They link into national recruitment and manage the process in Wales.
Offer information regarding policy and process relating to training programmes e.g. eligibility requirements, recruitment, revalidation, licensing and registration, LTFT etc.
Works within their Local Education Provider's Faculty Team, in partnership with the Wales Deanery to support, deliver and manage postgraduate medical training. Typically each has a specific area of responsibility (Trainers, Trainees or Quality). The Faculty Lead (Trainees) ensures the provision of appropriate systems of support for trainees.
Promote the availability of career information, career counselling and mentoring support for trainees. Can offer impartial careers guidance and if targeted help is needed, can facilitate access to other support options.
Ensures delivery of the Training Scheme for Specialty, General Practice and Dental Programmes in Wales, in accordance with national and regional policies.
Have an active role in planning recruitment, rotations, TOOP and ARCPs. Have expert insight into all aspects of career progression and all-Wales options in a specific Programme.
Based within Health Boards/teaching centres to support and manage delivery of the medical and dental Foundation Curricula at local level.
Can offer careers guidance and support to Foundation trainees and LAS Foundation doctors in their area e.g. portfolio support, considering future options.
Acts as a resource guide for a particular medical Specialty, also as an ambassador for the career pathway. They work as a liaison between the Specialty school and the Deanery Careers team.
Can advise trainees exploring a specialty or considering a change of pathway to their specialty. A resource guide for events, information or other specialty contacts.
Acts as the local/regional College representative for a hospital Specialty, with a duty to keep up to date with, new educational initiatives and changes to training pathways and examinations.
Can offer expert insight into particular programmes and can guide on developments in a Specialty or to useful careers resources hosted by the Royal College.
Works within training programmes to co-ordinate LTFT management and support.
Can offer insights experience of training LTFT.
Provides support to the local Faculty Team in all aspects of the Medical Education Department, including local induction, teaching activity and training programmes for trainees.
With their overview of programmes, structures and available resources in their Postgraduate Centres, they can offer practical advice about process or trainee procedures, and can signpost to appropriate contacts both locally and in the Deanery. Can be an impartial "sounding board".
Responsible for the overall supervision and management of a trainee's learning and educational progress during their placement(s), Ensures that trainees know how to access careers advice and support. Acts the crucial link between the educational training programme, progression requirements and provides educational appraisal, which can include first-line careers guidance and signposting.
Can act as initial sounding board for emerging careers queries or general questions, as well as advice on entering progressing within their own specialty. Can signpost to other support options.
Oversees a trainee's clinical work, and can provide practical guidance and support throughout their placement(s).
Can offer information and advice regarding career options and progression in their own specialty.
Based in Health Board teaching centres, local admin. teams provide operational support in the organisation of induction, teaching activity and training programmes for trainees.
Can offer practical advice about career-related process or trainee procedures, and can signpost to appropriate contacts both locally and in the Deanery.
